The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says the high cost of smart devices is one of the factors barring the country to achieve 100 percent accessibility of internet.
MACRA Director General Daudi Suleman said this in Lilongwe on Tuesday during regulatory body’s Data Protection Act Awareness and Compliance Training.
According to Suleman, the statistics shows that 63 percent of Malawians are not connected to the internet.
“In Malawi there are a number of factors that are barring us from achieving 100 percent accessibility of internet such as access to energy as well as the high cost of smart devices” he said.
However, he said the country is still making progress in the areas, revealing that currently penetration has doubled in the past three years from 18 to 36.9 percent.
He further said MACRA has put in initiatives to makesure that more people are connected to internet internet.
The training was funded by the Commonwealth and was aimed at raising awareness on issues around the data protection act.
