Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, has made history as the first Pope born in the United States and the first from North America.
On May 8, 2025, after a brief two-day conclave that signified a swift consensus among the cardinals, he was elected as Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant moment in the Church’s history.
Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost succeeds Pope Francis, inheriting the immense responsibilities of the papacy during a time of global challenges and internal Church reform.
Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV has had a distinguished career within the Catholic Church. He is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine (O.S.A.) and has been deeply committed to his faith since his early years.
His academic journey is notable, having earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University in 1977 and a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
He furthered his theological education at the Pontifical College of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where he obtained both a licentiate and a doctorate in canon law.
Pope Leo XIV’s leadership within the Church began to gain prominence when he served as the Prior General of the Augustinians, holding two six-year terms from 2001 to 2013.
His administrative and spiritual capabilities were further recognized when Pope Francis appointed him as the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru in 2014, a role he served in until 2023.
In January 2023, he was appointed as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a critical role that involved overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide.
On September 30, 2023, Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal, solidifying his influence and standing within the Church.
Upon his election, Pope Leo XIV emphasized his desire to remain close to the faithful, stating:
“I want to walk with the people, to be close to their hopes, their sufferings, and their dreams. The Church is not above the people; it is with the people.”
His election comes at a time of significant global and ecclesiastical challenges. The ongoing war in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, and the Church’s evolving stance on LGBTQ+ rights present critical issues that will require his pastoral guidance and diplomatic acumen.
His North American roots and global experience provide a unique perspective that many believe will bring a fresh and dynamic approach to the papacy, potentially shaping how the Church responds to these urgent matters
