President Lazarus Chakwera, who is also the Patron for the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS), has called on Malawians to support the Society in order to fulfil their target of raising K200 million for humanitarian activities.
He made the remarks during the launch of the MRCS 2025 Flag Week at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Thursday.
This year’s Flag Week is being held under the theme: “On the Side of Humanity.”
“It is very important to remember that natural disasters can affect anyone without considering their status, hence we must unite to help and support MRCS as it plays a crucial role in responding to disasters,” said Chakwera who has donated K2 million towards the cause.
In his remarks, MRCS president Innocent Majiya said the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is a reminder of the power of kindness, voluntary service, and unity in the face of crises such as war, natural disasters, health emergencies, and more.
“It’s a moment to appreciate those who devote themselves to serving humanity and to spread awareness about the values and activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent across the world
“During the Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we celebrate the unwavering commitment of millions of volunteers and staff worldwide and with over 85 thousand Volunteers in Malawi, who remain deeply rooted in their communities—including in areas affected by armed conflict, violence, and humanitarian crises, where access to essential aid and protection is often most needed while also raising awareness of the seven Fundamental Principles that guide our work.
“As we approach the Fundamental Principles’ 60th anniversary in October 2025, this year’s theme underscores the enduring significance of these principles, with a special focus on Humanity as the foundation of all humanitarian action, making the other principles possible.
“On this occasion, we seek to explore the essence of our Movement, emphasizing the vital importance of upholding our Fundamental Principles as we navigate crises. We aim to showcase the unique role of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and the extraordinary work of our volunteers and staff.
As we reflect on both recent and ongoing humanitarian challenges, we also honour the resilience and solidarity of the people affected by crises, as well as the dedication of those within our Movement who support them. Through this, we reaffirm our shared commitment to always stand on the side of humanity and to ensure that humanitarian action remains principled, independent and impartial,” he said
He further said in an increasingly complex and polarized world, where humanitarian needs grow year after year, our shared commitment to humanity is more than a guiding principle—it is a lifeline.
“Upholding humanity isn’t just a goal, it’s our imperative, ensuring that even in the darkest moments, we remain on the side of humanity and stand firm in safeguarding the humanitarian space,” said Majiya
Last year MRCS collected 56 million kwacha which was used to support the Cholera response in Karonga, Mangochi, Machinga and Balaka districts.
The resources further supported the anticipatory actions ahead of the Tropical Cyclone Chido and Jude where hundreds of families were saved from the effects of the disasters.
