Government has suspended classes in 13 districts in the southern region are expected to be affected by the Tropical Storm Jude.
The districts predicted to experience the most severe impact of these torrential rains which are expected to be accompanied by damaging winds leading to high risk of flooding are: Blantyre, Balaka, Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Dedza, Machinga, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Nsanje,Ntcheu, Phalombe, Salima, Thyolo, and Zomba.
The storm is expected to make landfall on Mozambique coast between Beira and Nampula on Sunday around night hours, according to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services.
The department said the rainfall is expected to surpass 100mm within 24 hours in the affected districts.
Announcing the suspension, the Ministry of Higher Education said as a precautionary measure, managers of higher education institutions in these districts, including Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), are tto temporarily suspend physical classes from Monday, 10th March to Thursday, 13th March, 2025, if the storm continues to this date.
“Students are advised to stay indoors for safety in order to preserve life. Please follow weather updates from DCCMS, and advisory information from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) at all times through various communication channels and platforms.
“During the suspension of classes, lecturers and students are encouraged to use available online platforms. When physical classes resume, lecturers are urged to provide remedial lessons or make up classes to recover for the lost time,” reads part of the statement signed by director of higher education, Levis Keliyasi Eneya.
