Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma has challenged opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi to provide evidence of the threats he claims to have received.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Muluzi stated that he received calls from officials of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), threatening him with arrest following an interview he gave to Zodiak Broadcasting Station.
However, he did not specify which comments had upset the MCP officials.
“I will not be intimidated! This evening, I received a call threatening me with arrest from the MCP government simply because I spoke the truth during my interview on Zodiak Radio.
“Let me be clear: I am standing up for the people of Malawi, and no amount of threats or intimidation will silence me. Our democracy must be defended, and I will not back down. If speaking the truth is a crime, then bring it on,” Muluzi said.
In response, Ching’oma urged Muluzi to present evidence so that the ministry can take appropriate action. He said, “Hon. Atupele, who called you? May I know where you reported this so that the government can address it properly?
“Otherwise, it is wrong to tell the nation that the government has intimidated you with arrests when your aim appears to be cultivating public sympathy. You have my number, so please contact me.”
