President Lazarus Chakwera has said government is working tirelessly to find long-term solutions for the forex and fuel crisis which the country has been experiencing for a long period.
Speaking during a national address on Wednesday at Mzuzu State Lodge in Mzuzu, Chakwera said
Malawians need to exercise discipline on the available resources.
“We are working with international partners like the World Bank, The African Development Bank,
International Monetary Fund to make sure that we have adequate resources like food, fertilizer, forex and
fuel,” said Chakwera.
The President further said recently he met the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh
Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his officials about setting up a Government-to-Government
arrangement for a more sustainable supply of fuel in the country.
President Chakwera added that he directed the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs to present a
revised budget in parliament which has a number of economic policies intended to reduce the
government’s budget deficit.
“These measures include the removal of VAT exemptions for importing vehicles from myself, the Vice
President, all Ministers, all Members of Parliament, all senior members of the Executive, the Judiciary
and the Military,” he said.
The President has emphasised the need to improve the welfare of Malawians by making sure there is
enough food and fertilizer to end hunger.
