Four young innovators from different schools and universities have emerged winners of the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge and are heading to Geneva to represent Malawi.
A team member of ResQ Malawi, Ethan Nkoloma, a student from St Andrews International High School in Blantyre, said the development comes after the team won against 63 teams from different schools and universities across the country.
Nkoloma said the team is expected to leave the country on 7 July 2025.
According to Nkoloma, representing Malawi in Geneva is a huge honor and puts Malawi on the global map for youth-led innovation and shows that Malawi is ready to join the conversation on using technology for good.
The challenge was organized by iMoSyS in Blantyre and supported by UN Women’s “Girls Can Code Too” initiative.
Prince Thawani, ResQ Malawi team mentor, and Shalon Makwinga, a computer network engineer from the University of Malawi, said the team robot’s ability to move autonomously and detect survivors through its responsive sensors captured the judges’ attention, from national champions to global.
Hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) during the AI for Good Summit in Geneva, it will attract 20 young innovators from China, India, Nigeria, among others.
