Vice President Saulos Chilima has been granted bail by Chief Resident Magistrate Madalitso Chimwaza.
Arrested Friday morning, Chilima was charged with six counts bordering on Corrupt practices by public Officer, advantage for using influence in regard to contracts and failing to make a full report to officers of the Bureau.
He is being accused of Corruptly receiving US$280, 000 from Zunneth Sattar and US$19 million for assisting Sattar’s company to get a contract from Malawi Defense Force and Malawi Police Service.
His lawyer, George Mtchuka Mwale has applied for bail describing his client as innocent until proven otherwise.
Magistrate Chimwaza granted Chilima bail with conditions that he surrender his travel documents and pay K1 million cash bail bond.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has hired veteran lawyer Mordecai Msiska to lead the prosecution team in the case.
ACB Chief Legal and Prosecution Officer Chrispine Khunga said they are waiting for the office of the Director of public prosecutions (DPP) to give them a go ahead on the matter.
