Leader of Opposition in Parliament, George Chaponda has challenged president Lazarus Chakwera to address the nation on the current fuel crisis.
Chaponda made the remarks when he toured some filling stations on Saturday afternoon to appreciate the current situation ahead of the end of year parliament meeting which starts on Monday.
According to Chaponda the current fuel crisis has now reached an alarming level with the potential of rendering people jobless as some businesses might collapse.
‘I’ve seen it for myself.I don’t have to wait for someone to tell me.People are spending sleepless nights waiting for fuel which has now turned into gold.The president must talk to us’, said Chaponda immediately after touring Petroda filling station at Kamuzu Central roundabout.
The leader of Opposition expressed his dismay at the president’s silence on the fuel crisis which is crippling the country’s economy.
‘Ahead of the end of year parliament meeting I will be moving a motion to summon the president to parliament to address the nation on this crisis’, said Chaponda.
At Independence drive total filling station,some Kabaza operators appealed to the leader of Opposition to ask government to consider removing a limit on the amount of fuel they can fill in their tanks.
‘For instance my motorcycle’s maximum fuel limit is 7 litres but I’m only being limited to 4 litres and that is affecting me heavily’, appealed one motorcyclist.
Malawi has now entered into a third week of a national fuel crisis with authorities clueless on when the situation will normalize.
