Mike Bango, Member of Parliament for Kasungu North, has urged the government and mobile network operators to urgently improve telecommunication services at Bingu National Stadium and Kamuzu Stadium, citing persistent challenges affecting media coverage and business operations.

Raising the issue during Tuesday’s parliamentary session, Bango—a seasoned journalist and football commentator for Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) —highlighted how poor network connectivity disrupts live match broadcasts and hampers financial transactions for vendors and fans.

“As someone who regularly covers matches, I can attest to the frustrations faced by media personnel, businesses, and spectators due to weak signals,” Bango told the House. “Network providers TNM and Airtel must prioritize upgrading infrastructure at these stadiums to ensure seamless connectivity.”

Bango emphasized that journalists and commentators struggle with dropped signals during live broadcasts, while vendors lose revenue when mobile money transactions fail.

As both a lawmaker and active sports analyst and commentator, Bango’s firsthand experience adds weight to his appeal.

The Kasungu North MP stressed that improved networks would boost Malawi’s sports economy and enhance media coverage of major events.

While no immediate timeline was given for upgrades, the government pledged to fast-track discussions with telecommunication operators to resolve the longstanding issue.

Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, responded to Bango’s concerns, assuring Parliament that his ministry would engage telecommunication companies to address the gaps.

“We recognize the economic and social impact of reliable networks in public spaces, and we are committed to working with service providers on lasting solutions,” Kunkuyu said.
