Mobile service provider Airtel Malawi has on Thursday unveiled the last five individuals who will compete to get the grand prize in the Zili Mwa Ife, Malawi Adalira inu campaign.

The Zili Mwa Ife, Malawi Adalira inu Campaign was launched September last year as a way of recognising and honoring individuals who are making strides in changing lives of people in their respective societies. From more than 1500 stories received since its inception, Airtel Malawi has managed to reward 16 top stories with various amounts of cash.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Thursday, Airtel Malawi marketing manager Thokozani Kamkondo Sande said they are thrilled to get to the final phase of the campaign where five stories from the top 16 that have been rewarded will compete for the grand prize.

Sande said so far, K63 million has been splashed among the top 16 stories and the final five will share K37.5 million.

“As Airtel Malawi we are glad that we have managed, after hearing their stories, to honor 16 individuals who are doing great work in their respective communities since September 2022. We are geared to see who will be the one to win the grand prize as we close the campaign. We urge all Malawians to support these individuals by voting for the stories they feel are touching and changing alot of lives”, said Sande.

The top five stories are from Malumbo Harawa who is a Biomedical engineering graduate who is addressing critical healthcare challenges by fixing oxygen concentrators and other equipment in hospitals for free, Stanislaus Sakwiya who used his experience in software engineering to develop mobile app called Mlimi Pay which provides a plartfom for smallholder farmers to save money to purchase crucial farm inputs, Chimwemwe Mwenefumbo who created a water pump that services his community with water pumped from deep valleys in Nkhata-bay and also created power stations that provide power to his community, Elias Matope who fundraised and bought shoes for 800 primary school learners as well as Juma Ali a standard 3 teacher who developed two android applications that help to grade learners.

To get recognised, these stories were vetted by a panel of judges which consisted of Wisdom Chimgwede, Joyful Paliyani and Joab Frank Chakhaza.

Echoing Sande’s remarks, Chimgwede said since September the panel has scrutinised the stories they got and picked who deserved to be rewarded but it is now time for Malawians to pick the best touching stories from the final five.

“It is now in the hands of Malawians to pick the best stories that are in the final phase of the campaign. It is important for Malawians to vote for the best stories. We feel we have done our part in screening these stories and now we expect Malawians to give a vote to the most touching stories”, Chimgwede said.

The top prize winner will be the one that gets more votes. To vote, Airtel Malawi subscribers are required to call 460 and cast their vote for the best 3 stories. Voting is open from 18 May until 4 June 2023
