Airtel Malawi, a leading telecommunications company in the country has on Wednesday night dangled a whooping K100 million towards exceptional individuals who are helping to eradicate challenges that their societies are facing.
The campaign which is dubbed “ZiliMwaife” is aimed at rewarding and celebrating the work of individuals or organisations that are trying to change lives of people in different societies.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Airtel Malawi Managing Director Charles Kamoto said Malawians are selfless people who despite facing a varying range of problems they still touch other people’s lives by uplifting them through taking actions regardless of having minimal resources.
Kamoto said as Airtel Malawi they are excited to launch the ZiliMwaife campaign as it wants to recognize and celebrate those type of people that take an action when they notice challenges that are affecting a society.
“There are two types of people out there, the first type is the one that sees a problem but does not take an action. There is another type that takes an action to find the solution to people’s problems. We want to be part of people’s lives through supporting those that are taking a huge step in being selfless and helping their societies regardless of the few resources at their disposal,” said Kamoto.
During the launch, Airtel Malawi gifted K13 million to Temwani Chilenga a primary school teacher who looks after more than 2300 orphans who are children from around Dodani area in Lilongwe.
Chilenga started her project in 2018 with the salary she was earning as a primary school teacher after noticing the challenges that orphaned children were facing in the area.
She urged others to emulate taking an action whenever they see a problem in a society and bless others with the little they have.
“Whenever there is a problem in a society, Malawians should feel it in their hearts to help wherever there is a need to do so and shouldn’t wait to get more resources to do so. You can start with the little you have and change a society. I am very thankful to Airtel today as this money will rejuvenate the efforts that we are making in looking after these children. This amount of money will help us to work on a few things that we were planning to do in order to make our place a heaven to the kids that have no one to look after them,” she said.
Another beneficiary of the ZiliMwaife Campaign who went away with K10 million and was unveiled at the launch was Dumisani Kaliati who invented a drone that help to ferry medical supplies to hard to reach areas in Kasungu district.
Kaliati an engineering graduate from Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) formerly The Polytechnic created a drone to bridge the gap to medical care that was there in the district.
