As one way of celebrating World Children’s day, leading telecommunications company Airtel Malawi on Friday hosted learners from Salima LEA School from Salima district at the company’s head offices in Lilongwe.

Among other things, the learners had a tour of Airtel Malawi head offices, one of the transmission towers in the city and an interaction with several staff members who shared with the learners what their work is all about.

Airtel Malawi Managing Director, Charles Kamoto said the idea was to celebrate with the kids and show them what the telecommunications company operates so that the learners could be inspired.

Kamoto said 20th November is a special day that the company observes and feels the interaction is a better preparation for the relay race ahead where everything will be run by these children in the near future.

“World Children’s day is a special day for us. The connection that we have with these learners is a transfer of knowledge. These kids needs to be prepared for the future. The offices we are filling now will be occupied by them in the near future. We have showed them the technological advancements that have occurred up to date in the telecommunications industry and have challenged them to take the development further in the future.

The main message we have given them is that we used to be like them and here we are today. We are running the show but soon enough it is them who will be running the show. They should be inspired and have a purpose for what they are doing” said Kamoto.

Salima LEA school is one of the school that Airtel Malawi has adopted in the country so far.

Salima LEA School Deputy Head teacher, Rodgers Kaipa said the trip to Airtel Malawi offices is a very big motivation to the learners and he expects the learners to have their performance improved when they return to class.

Kaipa echoed Kamoto’s sentiments by saying that the learners have a model to emulate from and should always fight to take over the positions in the near future.

One of the learners, Michel Zolowere, said they are proud to celebrate World Children’s day with an educational trip to Airtel Malawi as they have had a rare moment to see how the telecommunications company is run.

“As learners we are very happy as we were able to see how Airtel Malawi employees work in different offices as a company. It is a rare opportunity to see how mobile telecommunication is done. This trip has motivated us to work hard in our studies.” said Zolowere.

World Children’s day is commemorated annually on 20th November. This year’s commemoration is under the theme “Inclusion, for every child”.
