Police in Blantyre arrested 18-year-old Abdul Rahman Javeed for careless driving and charged him with causing death by reckless or negligence.
He is currently on Police bail.
According ton Limbe Police spokesperson Aubrey Singanyama, on Saturday last week, Abdul hit a pedestrian, Hassan Chimasula who died in the evening the same day while receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).
“He was driving from the direction of Royal Motors heading towards Mpingwe on 07/10/23 at around 15:30 hours, in course of driving he intended to overtake a motor vehicle which was making a turn. He hit a male pedestrian Hassan Chimasula, 32 yrs, from Mchinjo village, T/A Mlumbe in Zomba district.
“Onlookers then ganged up with an aim of assaulting Abdul and he then drove off from the scene and alerted his parents who took the matter to Limbe Police Station.
“Traffic Police officers rushed to the scene and took the victim to Q.E.C.H where he was admitted and Abdul was also referred to the same facility where he was treated as an put patient. Chimasula died at the medical facility during the night of the same day,” he said
He said Abdul has since been charged with causing death by reckless or negligence driving contrary to Section 126 sub section 4C of Road traffic Act.
“He will appear before court soon, ” said Singanyama
