The Wildlife Environmental Society of Malawi WESM has launched a K312 million Chia Lagoon Water Bird Project aimed at restoring the population of birds around the lagoon in Nkhotakota district.
Speaking during the launch of the project on Friday in the area of Traditional Authority Kalimanjira, WESM National Chairperson Dr Tiwonge Mzumara Gawa emphasized that the project has potential to attract local and international tourists interested in unique bird’s species.
According to Gawa, a research conducted by Malawi University of Science and technology (MUST) shows that Chia Lagoon is home to an impressive 70 species of birds, making it a valuable destination for bird enthusiasts.
Director of Fisheries, Dr. Hastings Zidana who was guest of honor at the event stressed that the project has a goal which is in line with Malawi vision 2063, on the conservation of natural resources adding that it also focuses on implementing activities that offer alternative livelihoods for the communities.
Meanwhile, Traditional Authority Kalimanjira described the project as timely, saying WESM is working with related organizations and structures for the smooth implementation of the project.
WESM has been dedicated to protecting Malawi’s remarkable biodiversity and ecosystem for over 75 years in the country.
With support from United Kingdom based Dawn Initiative, the project will work with nine villages in the areas of Senior Chief Mwadzama and Traditional Authority Kalimanjira and Nkhanga in the district.
