UTM Stands Firm on SKC Legacy of Inclusiveness Ahead of Highly Anticipated Elective Conference

Social commentators have showered praise on the United Transformation Movement (UTM) for its unwavering commitment to the inclusive ethos championed by its late founder, Dr. Saulos Klausi Chilima.

As anticipation builds for the party’s elective conference scheduled for November 17, 2024, in Mzuzu, the atmosphere has shifted from uncertainty to optimism following a pivotal meeting on November 6, 2024, involving the central executive committee and the party’s president, Micheal Usi, who also serves as Malawi’s vice president.

In a significant turn of events, UTM dispelled doubts about its internal coherence by resolving prior disputes, thereby reasserting its dedication to democratic values.

Patricia Kaliati, the party’s secretary general, and Felix Njawala, its publicity secretary, confirmed during a press conference in Lilongwe that UTM’s plans for its convention remain intact, with nomination fees upheld and the deadline for nominations extended to November 11, 2024.

“This development signifies a return to democratic principles within the party, aiming to preserve the legacy of its founder, the late Dr. Saulos Klausi Chilima, which is centered on inclusivity and collective growth,” remarked social commentator Phillip Banda. His words resonate deeply as UTM navigates the challenges ahead with a newfound clarity of purpose.

Before this resolution, worries about constitutional integrity and the potential for manipulation of the electoral process were palpable within the party. Specifically, concerns were raised about the candidacy of Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, the former governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, who was facing criticism for alleged ineligibility due to a supposed two-year membership requirement.

However, UTM’s recent affirmation of democratic principles counters these claims, allowing Dr. Kabambe to contest and reaffirming the party’s commitment to a level playing field for all aspiring leaders.

Dr. Kabambe, regarded for his robust economic acumen and political insight, has emerged as a formidable candidate. His ambitious turnaround strategy for Malawi has resonated strongly with party members and the general populace alike, positioning him as a potential catalyst for transformative leadership. In light of the restored sense of fairness within the party, members of Dr. Kabambe’s camp are expressing renewed confidence. “Now that the playing field has been leveled, we believe Dr. Kabambe stands a strong chance of leading UTM to victory on November 17,” said a member of his team, reflecting a palpable air of hope.

Banda further underscores that the UTM’s commitment to democracy and transparency extends far beyond mere political strategy; it embodies a fundamental tenet of governance that echoes with citizens disenchanted by backroom dealings and exclusionary practices. “By standing firm against these forces, UTM not only honors the legacy of its founder but also reinforces the trust placed in it by the electorate,” he stated.

As the party heads toward its critical electoral conference, members and supporters are reminded of the essence of democracy: the belief that every voice counts and every vote carries weight. UTM has reasserted its commitment to creating a party that embodies the values of inclusiveness and engagement critical to Malawi’s democratic ideals.

The upcoming convention offers not just an opportunity for new leadership but also a moment for UTM to reaffirm its dedication to the principles that have guided it thus far. With Dr. Kabambe stepping into the fray, the party stands on the cusp of a transformative era, promising meaningful change and resilient governance.

As Banda eloquently puts it, “Let the spirit of democracy lead the way forward.”

This is not merely a call to action for UTM; it is a clarion call for all Malawians to engage in the democratic processes that shape their future. In doing so, the UTM positions itself not only as a political entity but as a beacon of hope and inclusivity for the nation.
