UTM has announced the expulsion of Michael Usi, citing his alleged violation of the party’s constitution and conduct deemed detrimental to its unity and integrity.
The decision, effective immediately, was revealed in a press statement dated December 30, 2024, and signed by UTM National Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala.
According to the statement, Usi was found guilty of two key charges after a thorough disciplinary process. The first accusation is that he provoked division within the party.
The UTM stated, “Usi mobilized UTM supporters to attend a government function while wearing UTM regalia and displaying Party symbols, despite the formal termination of the political alliance between UTM and MCP.”
The second charge involved supporting a rival political party. The press release alleged that “during voter registration whistle-stops in Mwanza District, Usi publicly endorsed the MCP government by using its slogan, ‘Boma ndi Lomwe!,’ thereby violating Article 22(8)(k) of the UTM Constitution, which prohibits supporting or joining political organizations not in alliance with UTM.”
Despite being summoned to appear before the party’s Disciplinary Committee, Usi reportedly chose not to attend. Instead, he communicated through legal counsel that “he did not recognize the authority of the disciplinary process,” the statement said.
The party emphasized its commitment to its core values, stating, “Unity, integrity, and loyalty to the Party’s vision are non-negotiable. Members who act contrary to these principles will be held accountable to safeguard the collective interests of the Party.”
Meanwhile, Speaking earlier today, Usi said no one is legally responsible for removing him from the party saying they all acquired the positions unconstitutionally.
Usi joined the party when he was chosen as a running mate for late Saulos Chilima during 2019 tripartite elections.
He later on stepped into the party’s presidential seat after the demise of Chilima and he was also appointed as the Vice President of the Republic by Lazarus Chakwera.
