Umunthu for Sustainable Empowerment, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of the elderly and individuals with disabilities, has called on religious leaders to play a crucial role in promoting the protection of these vulnerable from violence.
Director of Research and Training, Davie Chapulapula, emphasized that religious leaders have a significant impact on society and can help sensitize the masses on the dangers of violating the rights of the elderly and disabled.
Chapulapula highlighted that these marginalized groups are often subjected to human rights violations, including accusations of witchcraft and exploitation for ritual purposes.
He urged stakeholders to work collaboratively to fight against violence towards the elderly and disabled, creating a conducive environment for them to live.
“We encourage religious leaders and other stakeholders to work together in protecting the elderly and disabled people in the country. Let’s sensitize people about the disadvantages of violence against these individuals so that we can create a society that values and respects them” Chapulapula Said.
Pastor Ronald Kaduya of Hope of Glory Christian Pentecostal International Church echoed Chapulapula’s sentiments, citing the Bible’s teachings on respecting the elderly and treating all individuals with dignity.
“People who fear and obey the commandments of God often practice good behavior and would not engage in disrespecting the elderly and disabled,” Kaduya said.
Meanwhile, Director of Joy Abilities Empowerment, Benerdetter Vaz, expressed concern over the continued victimization of the elderly and disabled, calling for stiff penalties for perpetrators to deter others.
Vaz added that by working together, stakeholders can help create a society that values and protects the rights of all individuals, regardless of age or ability.
We must work together.Religious leaders, Government and NGOs to implement all the rights concerning elders and disabled people.
