The first 10 games of the 2023 TNM Super League season ended with Silver Strikers on top following their 4-0 win over Karonga United, while top scorers race remains tight as Kumwembe ended a goal drought to move a goal behind top scorer Lanjesi Nkhoma.
Mighty Mukuru Wanderers fans barbarism happened yet again after their 1-1 draw at home against Dedza Dynamos.
We take a look at five major talking points over the weekend.
SILVER CLIMB THREE POINTS CLEAR
Silver Strikers returned on top of the TNM Super League log table on Sunday afternoon, 24 hours after being dislodged by FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
The People’s Team closed the gap at the summit of the log table with a draw against Kamuzu Barracks which tied them with Silver Strikers on 21 points but they climbed top thanks to their superior goal difference.
But on Sunday, The Bankers continued their seemingly unstoppable charge towards first TNM Super League title in eight years with a 4-0 victory over Karonga United that put them three points off FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
A Hat trick from Patrick Macheso and a goal from Mark Fodya ensured the Bankers bagged maximum points.
WANDERERS FANS BAY FOR PLAYERS, COACH BLOOD YET AGAIN
It has become a habit for Mighty Mukuru Wanderers supporters to attack their players and technical team whenever their team stumbles.
When the team gave away a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 with Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar last Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium some fans reacted angrily as they denied players and officials to board the team bus. Their wishes successfully happened as players left Kamuzu Stadium premises by foot.
Some footages showed the team’s captain being attacked by a multitude when he was trying to leave the match venue.
This was the second time for this barbaric act to happen this season as it started a fortnight ago in week 9 at Bingu National Stadium when the team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Extreme FC where the captain was also forced to kneel before the supporters to apologize.
NO WORRY, NO PROBLEM
Mighty Wakawaka Tigers coped without the injured centre back Wally Gondwe to beat Moyale Barracks 1-0 and move from 13th to 9th on standings.
9th minute strike from Precious Chiudza was enough to hand Mighty Tigers maximum points at Mzuzu Stadium.
Gondwe has been solid since the start of the season, helping his team to keep three cleen sheets in 8 league games he has features this season.
In absence of Gondwe, The Kau-Kau Boys started Alex Kambirinya who defended well in one-on-one situations as well as aerial’s and a few good moments of covering behind his partner, Kelvin Banda. The duo managed to shutdown dangerous Moyale Barracks attackers, Gasten Simkonda and Raphael Phiri in the entire 90 minutes of the match.
PAT-TRICK
Silver Strikers forward Patrick Macheso was the hero of the weekend after scoring hatrick to help his team beat Karonga United 4-0.
Macheso gave the Bankers a 1-0 lead at half time before adding other two goals on 46 and 68 minutes with the last goal coming in from Mark Fodya.
It was the third hatrick of the season as Christopher Kumwembe was the first to register his three goals in a single game against Red Lions in week three and Macheso’s team mate Stain Davie scored his hattrick in Bankers 4-1 win over Bangwe All Stars in week 7 of this year’s League.
KUMWEMBE ENDS THREE GAME GOAL DROUGHT
Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Forward Christopher Kumwembe has ended a three game goal drought.
Kumwembe had gone 270 minutes without scoring a goal before last Sunday which by his standards is quiet a drought.
But the former Civo Service United star was on hand to connect home a Stanley Sanudi cross earlier into the first half of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers clash with Dedza Dynamos who pulled level through Edward Dakalila in the second half to force a 1-1 draw.
Kumwembe who took an early lead on the top scorers chart after scoring five goals in three matches is now one goal behind top scorer Lanjesi Nkhoma who by week three was second with three goals.
Kumwembe is tied with Silver Strikers’ Stain Davie while Clement Nyondo and Mphatso Magaleta come third and fourth with six and five goals respectively.
