The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has organized the fundraising dinner in their quest to mobilize the financial resources for the 16 teams that are expected to participate in the forthcoming season.
Sulom on Friday afternoon held the press briefing where they announced that they announced that the fundraising dinner is slated for March 1, 2023 in Lilongwe at the Bingu International Conference Centre.
“The main aim is to ensure that we transform the game of football in Malawi,” said Sulom stand-in President, Colonel Gilbert Mitawa. “We want football to contribute to the country’s economy in line with the vision 2063.
“The objective of the dinner is to make sure that we get some funds for the teams [to share] so that we are on good footing as we start the league. We want it to be as attractive and competitive as 2023 and also go beyond what we witnessed last season.”
Sulom has pegged the Gold Category at MK10 million While the Silver Category has been pegged at MK7 million. The Bronze Category is at MK5 million while an Individual Category is at MK200, 000.
Meanwhile, Mitawa has asked the companies and individuals to support Sulom’s vision.
“If we are to have an attractive season, we have to raise the standards of the game. If you recall, when we were taking over this leadership after the elections, we made a commitment to revive, reform and rebrand.
“For this reason, we have decided to reach out to potential sponsors, companies, organizations and institutions to come and help us organizing this fundraising dinner,” he added.
Fleetwood Haiya led leadership pledged to prioritize the team’s financial support during the manifesto last year when they were dogging for the positions at Sulom before beating Tiya Somba-Banda for the Presidency.
“The clubs are the hub and the DNA of our football. It has been an all-strange deal that in the past decades, Clubs, have not been at the centre of the league. They have been treated like strangers in their own matrimonial home. They have been rarely consulted, let alone considered in key policy decisions affecting them. It is therefore not surprising, that clubs have not reaped the benefits of their efforts.
“My leadership will ensure a people-centred leadership for, and on behalf of the clubs. All clubs will be treated equally and ours will be a bottom-up approach in every other consultative process, with Clubs as key stakeholders. The interest of the club will come first. To advance this, I will create direct linkages and synergies in policy formulation, implementation, and evaluation at all levels of governance
“My leadership will engage in an aggressive commercialisation drive which will not only increase revenue for the league and the clubs but create a corporate brand. This commercialisation drive will build on the current source of funds while exploring new commercial avenues,” said Haiya during his manifesto last year February.
Fleetwood fleeted Walter Nyamilandu months later for the Football Association of Malawi Presidency and Mitawa who was his Vice President stepped on pending for the Annual General Assembly.
