President Lazarus Chakwera’s insistence of keeping embattled State House Chief of Staff Prince Kapondamgaga has been questioned days after he was officially mentioned in the corruption charges against businessman businessman Zuneth Sattar in United Kingdom.
UK”s National Crimes Agency (NCA) has also named former vice president, late Saulos Chilima, former Malawi Police Service (MPS) Inspector General (IG) George Kainja and former Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Reyneck Matemba in charges which businessperson Zunneth Sattar is facing in the United Kingdom.
Satter, who was arrested in 2021, is facing 18 charges related to bribing foreign officials, appeared before the Central London Magistrate Court on May 30 2025 where he was granted bail.
Chakwera removed Kapondamgaga from State House when his name first appeared in the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) investigations as one of the public officers who had received a Mercedes Benz S Class 350d and other gifts from Mr Zuneth Sattar
However, he was later reinstated after investigations by ACB were closed after he voluntarily returned the Mercedes Benz S-Class 350d and K70,150,670.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) executive director Sylvester Namiwa questioned Chakwera’s continued shielding of Kapondamgaga.
“If you are indeed serious about fighting corruption, then you are sending a totally different message to Malawians and the international community by allowing someone suspected of indulging in corruption to remain in public office
“The recent developments in the UK have raised serious questions over your own image and that of the State regarding your stance on the fight against corruption. If Mr. Kapondamgaga was in the UK, he would have been arrested as a co-accused,” Namiwa said
