Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is set to adopt space technology as one way of advancing technology in the country.
Speaking in Lilongwe on Wednesday, MACRA Director of Finance, Mphatso Phiri said the Authority is setting up a space agency which will give access to space data to the country and help in socio-economic development.
“The country needs to be knowledge based. People should have access to information of what is happening around, as such, with the coming in of space technology it is going to give them an opportunity to analyze the data which is available at the pace,”said Phiri.
Chairperson for Malawi Space Agency Taskforce, Thandikile Chisala Mbvundula highlighted that space technology is important as it will work to improve the socio economic challenges which the country faces such as natural disasters.
Mbvundula said people will be able to communicate without difficulties because in most cases during rainy seasons communication becomes difficult.
“We are mandated to establish a space agency as this technology will utilize the space information which is obtained through space. There is already satellite data that we are going to be following for this technology to happen,” she said.
Space technology will work in different sectors such as education, health, climate change, communications and agriculture to provide space data.
