The Southern Region Press Club (SRPC) has purchased a one-hectare piece of land worth K2.5 million to establish cooperatives.
The land, located at Whayo Village in Traditional Authority (TA) Kapeni in Blantyre, will be transformed into a poultry and piggery farm to enhance the living standards of media personnel.
SRPC President, Ronald Amos, stated that the club’s vision is to create an environment where press members can achieve economic growth and independence, serving as a vital link between financial stability and the ability of journalists to operate with autonomy and integrity.
SRPC members will have the opportunity to buy shares from the cooperatives, and a comprehensive business plan will be created to outline the group’s goals, objectives, and strategies.
The club was founded with the goal of promoting solidarity and collaboration among media, recognizing that economic empowerment is crucial for journalists’ independence in the southern and eastern parts of Malawi.
Britta Mpata, an SRPC member, expressed interest in joining the cooperative, highlighting farming as a potential pathway for smallholder producers to access more lucrative market opportunities and improve livelihoods while reducing poverty.
