Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that 15 people were arrested on Sunday when FCB Nyasa Bullets beat Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at Bingu National Stadium for allegedly revenue leakage.

This has been revealed in a report for the Blantyre Derby match released on Wednesday by FAM.

“There were some incidents that were reported that lead to revenue leakage. The Malawi Police Services apprehend 15 suspects who are currently being interrogated” reads part of the statement

Meanwhile, FAM has expressed satisfaction with the outcome of net revenue raised on Sunday which was aimed at raising funds to support victims of the tropical cyclone Freddy.

“Through the 2023 NBS Bank Charity Shield, FAM managed to raise MK20.351 million in net revenue which is almost double the MK10.343 million which was raised last year and the highest since the Charity Shield was introduced in 2026”

According to the statement, apart from the MK20.351 million from the NBS Bank Charity Shield, FAM will also channel MK10,148,160 from the revenue realized from the AFCON qualifiers match between Malawi and Egypt for the cause in response to the public appeal made by the State President, His excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on 13th March 2023.

The statement further said, FAM, in collaboration with its technical implementing partner Red Cross Malawi, is now embarking on necessary logistics and processes for the identification and procurement of the required items. Part of their support will also extend to football stakeholders who were affected by Cyclone Freddy and football legends who are struggling.

In addition to the funds, the NBS Bank Charity Shield has also helped to raise awareness of the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy and that more needs to be done to ensure that the victims are adequately supported.
