Head of Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) Dr Janet Banda has expressed satisfaction with the progress of the construction of the M1 Road and some city roads in Lilongwe.

This is despite the fact that some roads have had their completion period  extended, like  Mzimba Street which was supposed to be completed in October, will be ready for use in December, according Resident Engineer, Paul Kulemeka

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the M1 Road, Kenyatta Road, Mzimba Street and Crossroads to Kanengo stretch, Banda said despite some delays in the road construction projects, there has been progress made so far as contractors are working round the clock to meet deadlines.

” We visited four roads today. If we go by the road from Crossroad to Kanengo, the construction work is on track and we are satisfied. The other road is M1 to Mponela which has delayed because there were a lot of issues but I am glad to say that most of the issues were resolved during our last meeting in August. The solutions that we came up are being implemented and people will now see significant progress,” Banda said.

“For Mzimba Street, that is Crossroads Roundabout to Kamuzu Central Hospital and Kenyatta Poad from Parliament to Kamuzu Central Hospital, we have been assured that the contractors will start base stage two weeks from now and then surfacing in November and December this year. For M1 Road, at least five kilometres before Mponela will have tar completed by the end of this year,” she added.

Banda believes that the contractors will meet their targets for this year as per their promise.

Speaking in a separate interview, Resident Engineer for Mzimba Street and Kenyatta Road, Paul Kulemeka said initially the completion timeline for Mzimba Street was October this year but it has been extended to December this year.

He said Kenyatta Road is expected to be completed between July and August, 2024.
