The Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change in Parliament chairperson Werani Chilenga has called on the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) to hike fuel prices.
Chilenda said the recommendation was reached at after observing that Mera is selling fuel at cheap prices compared to landing costs.
However, he was quick to advise the body to make sure that there is fuel stability in the country.
However, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadric Namalomba who is also a member of the Natural Resources and Climate Change Committee said raising fuel prices will have a negative impact on the lives of people.
As the debate on the committee’s report was ongoing, DPP MPs moved out of Parliament, protesting that the Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo was not giving them chance to speak on the topic.
Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP) George Chaponda said they noted that the government side wanted to force everyone to endorse the fuel hike.
