President Peter Mutharika will today open Parliament without the Leader of Opposition (LoP).
This follows a letter which the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has written the Clerk of Parliament that the Party is expected to hold elections of Parliamentary leadership on Saturday.
This means that MCP president Lazarus Chakwera’s appointment of Simplex Chithyola as LoP and Moses Kunkuyu as Chief Whip has faced resistance.
“Following the direction from the Right Honourable Speaker on party parliamentary leadership, we would like to communicate that Malawi Congress Party parliamentary party will conduct its election on Saturday, 1st November 2025. We will communicate the same to your good office on Monday, 3rd November 2025.
“As you would appreciate the political Parties Act recognizes the Secretary General of a party as the Chief Executive Officer of any party and hence the focal point in terms of any communication. You will therefore hear from the office of the Secretary General of Malawi Congress Party on the same,” reads part of the letter from MGP deputy general secretary Gerald Kazembe, to Speaker of Parliamentary Sameer Suleman
