The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that preliminary figures show a total of 2,515,315 people were registered during the Phase III of the Voter Registration process in readiness for the 2025 General Election.
Phase III of voter registration targeted eight Councils, namely: M’Mbelwa, Lilongwe, Lilongwe City. Mangochi, Mangochi Municipality, Mwanza. Chikwawa and Nsanje District Councils.
“During the registration process, a total of 2,515,315 people were registered. Out of this number. 1,097,551 are male and 1,417,764 are female representing 44% and 56% and of the total number of registered voters, respectively.
“In comparison with the projected total number of people in the Councils, aged 18 years and above in 2025, which according to the National Statistical Office is 3,571,276 (1.689,486 male and 1,881,790 female), the number of registered voters under Phase III represents 70% of the projected population.
“Disaggregated by gender, 65% of the projected male population has registered while 75% of the projected female population have registered. At Council level the number of people registered is as presented in the table below.
“The Commission wishes to emphasise that these figures are preliminary, and the public must exercise caution on their use. Since the data has not been cleaned, figures may slightly change if duplicate registrations are discovered, and the public will be informed about the same,” reads part of the statement signed by Andrew Mpesi, MEC Chief Elections Officer
