Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LoP), George Chaponda, has called for the immediate suspension of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority’s (MACRA) controversial procurement of a USD 1.5 million (over MWK 3 billion) surveillance device.
Chaponda described the expenditure as unjustifiable, especially in light of the country’s current economic struggles.
In a statement, Chaponda criticized MACRA’s priorities, labeling the move a misuse of public resources. He called on the government to halt the procurement process and subject it to thorough parliamentary and public scrutiny.
Chaponda emphasized that the procurement should be put on hold until Parliament can assess its necessity and alignment with national priorities.
“This decision is ill-timed and fails to address the pressing needs of Malawians who are struggling with inflation, unemployment, and hunger. Investing in surveillance at such a time is a betrayal of public trust,” he said.
While MACRA claims the device will combat misinformation and promote digital literacy, Chaponda warned of its potential misuse to infringe on citizens’ privacy and freedom of expression.
“This procurement not only raises serious questions about government priorities but also poses a significant threat to Malawi’s hard-won democracy,” he added.
Chaponda reiterated his call for the government to prioritize critical investments in health, education, and food security over what he described as “divisive and potentially oppressive measures.”
At the time of publication, MACRA had not responded to the opposition leader’s statement.
As the nation waits for further developments, the spotlight now falls on MACRA, Parliament, and the government to address these growing concerns.
