Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Presidential candidate Walter Nyamilandu on Thursday promised to set structures that will help Malawi National Football Team’s qualification to the World Cup within the next 10 years if re-elected for a sixth term.
Unveiling his manifesto under the theme “bridging the gap” at BICC in Lilongwe, Nyamilandu said the main focus of his sixth term will be bridging gaps in administration, welfare and infrastructure.
He said: “I want to see Malawi National Team to go to the World Cup in the next 10 years, bridging the gap will start the process but for us to go to the world Cup we need to improve players incentives, the moment we must benchmark them with what other players are getting in the region, Zambia and South Africa players get 1000 dollars for the World Cup, 500 dollars for the Africa Cup of Nations and COSAFA 250 USD so if they see that they go into the field of play to die for the country, they’ll be motivated”
“And again I want to see the funding for the Flames and Scorchers increase, the K180 million is not enough, it’s only sufficient for one game and now we must talk with Government to give us atleast K1billion and when the money is made available it must shared equally between the Flames and Scorchers that way we are giving opportunity to Womens football which has tramendous potential” said Nyamilandu
Nyamilandu also said he will trim the number of Super League teams from 16 to 12 in a bid to improve competition.
In infrastructure, Nyamilandu promised to construct new technical centre in Lilongwe.
“For women’s football they must have dedicated resources, where they train, the technical centre must be dedicated so Mpira Village in Chiwembe must be dedicated to women, the men we must build them a technical centre here in Lilongwe”
He also promised to employ Deputy Secretary or Technical Director for Women Football so that there’s more focus on developing women’s football and stand a chance of going to World Cup in next eight years.
He will compete against Super League president Fleetwood Haiya in December 16 polls.
