There is hope of improved supply of potable and clean water in Nkhatabay District as construction of the Multi-Million Kwacha Nkhatabay Town Water Supply and Sanitation Project is nearing completion.
This was revealed on Friday morning when President Lazarus Chakwera toured the project’s construction site in the district as part of his tour of the Northern Region where he is expected to inspect various development projects being undertaken.
While at the site Chakwera inspected progress of construction works at the intake, the tank as well as the scheme.
Once completed the project will increase access to potable water to over 105,000 people in the district.
The Government of Malawi through the Northern Region Water Board with financial support from AFDB and OFID is implementing the USSD30.55 42 month project to increase access to potable water in the lakeshore district which recently was hit by a cholera outbreak.
Construction works commenced in 2018 and is expected to be completed at the end of this year.
Among other things the project will involve rehabilitating, upgrading and expanding the existing Nkhatabay Town Water Supply System and provision of solid and liquid waste management facilities in order to provide reliable and sustainable water and sanitation services.
