In a move that has shocked the local political landscape, UTM Spokesperson Frank Mwenifumbo has announced that he has resigned from the party less than 2 years after assuming the position of party spokesperson.

Mwenifumbo was appointed UTM Spokesperson after the fresh 2020 Presidential elections which ushered UTM into government following a grand electoral alliance that saw 9 political parties teaming up to dethrone the then governing DPP.

In a letter which is in our possession and addressed to party Secretary General, Mwenifumbo says he has resigned from UTM with immediate effect as he wants to concentrate on his private life and that he harbours no immediate political ambitions.

He said that he already had an audience with party President Saulos Chilima on 13 October this year where he tendered his resignation but he had delayed to make his resignation public out of respect as by then Chilima’s wife was receiving medical attention in South Africa.

According to the letter, Chilima already nodded to Mwenifumbo’s resignation and wished him well in his future endeavours.

“On 13 October,2022, I called on the party president RT Honourable Saulos Chilima at his private office in area 43 to tender my resignation from party members. I explained to the president my reasons for my resignation, and he graciously accepted it,” reads part of the letter.

During the 20119 nullified Presidential elections Mwenifumbo run on a United Democratic Front-UDF ticket as running mate to then UDF presidential candidate Atupele Muluzi.

His resignation comes few weeks after Muluzi, who announced his retirement from active politics, made a U-turn.
