As one way of helping communities in their catchment area, Music Crossroads Malawi is with support from its partners assisting schools to have modern sanitation facilities.

Music Crossroads Malawi is based in the populous Area 23 and its catchment area covers other highly populated townships like Nchesi, Kaliyeka, Biwi, Chilinde 1 and 2, Chiuzila, Mtsinje and many more.

Music CrossRoads Malawi Director Mathews Ghayighayi Mfune disclosed in an interview that partners have responded favorably to their proposal and some have built toilets at Kaliyeka and Mlodza Schools.

According to Mfune the development has led to many students especially girls not to miss classes.

“As an organization we are there to promote music and other aspects of life. We felt it wise to help schools within our vicinity because that is where our future or even present students come from. We are very happy with the response from our partners because things are moving on the ground,” said Mfune.

He added that with schools having better toilets it is a motivating factor for them not to miss classes hence giving them a chance to perform better in classes as they are aspiring for a better future.

Students from the two schools we interviewed said they are highly indebted to Music Crossroads Malawi for its efforts to build the toilets.

“We used to miss classes when we were menstruating but now that is history. We just want to encourage many more partners to come in and offer us support in other areas that our schools are lacking,” said Gift Phiri a student from Mlodza said.

A student from Kaliyeka Esther Kalinduna concurred with Phiri that going to school with better toilets is a big plus.

Even parents are also very elated with the development saying when their children were missing classes they were being stressed.

“Bravo to Music Cross Roads Malawi. What they have done is invaluable and we hope together with their partners they will be doing more,” Keneth Mbwana who has two children at Kaliyeka explained.

In Malawi many schools even in cities have got problems with sanitation facilities forcing students especially girls to miss classes for some days during every month.
