Engineer Dr. Matthews Chinombo Mtumbuka has announced his intention to vie for a seat on the United Transformation Movement (UTM), ending speculation as to his next move.
There had been speculation that Mtumbuka will throw his hat in the ring for the next November’s UTM presidency but that has now been laid to rest with his announcement.
Mtumbuka made an announcement at a lengthy press conference held at the BICC in Lilongwe, under “Ndizotheka” moto.
“I stand before you today, humbled and honored to announce my decision to enter the world of politics”
“This was not an easy choice, but one that I feel compelled to make, driven by a sense of duty and loyalty and purpose”
“Therefore today, I stand to make this important announcement. This is not just a political announcement, but a moment to offer you a bold vision for a party and the future of Malawi” he said
Mtumbuka said his vision for serving Malawians will start by building a strong UTM before leading the nation.
“We want UTM that truly represents the spirit of unity and inclusiveness. UTM that harnesses the physical strength and energy of our youth while drawing from the wisdom and experience of our fathers and mothers”
“I want to make UTM vibrant in all positions not only cities. We want a UTM that is national party rooted in the grassroots not just on social media but with a strong Area Committees in the remote village that we can think of”
“We want UTM that will have a strong, undeniable presence on the paper, UTM that will not just be another political player but a dominant one that shape the future of this country for the years to come, a party that speaks for all Malawians”
He further said his philosophy and the cornerstone of his leadership is plan, execute and deliver results.
However, Mtumbuka’s founding plan – should he be elected as the next Malawi President – includes improving Wants education system, youth empowerment, improve agriculture sector, mitigating a millennial forex challenges, improve healthcare system, stabilize economy, reduce unemployment rate, among others.
Meanwhile, Mtumbuka has urged delegates to vote for him at UTM convention, saying he believes he has the vision, the experience and the determination to make the party formidable force that Malawi needs, and a partner that will drive real, meaningful change, starting from the 2025.
Who is Engineer DR. Matthews Chinombo Mtumbuka
Mtumbuka was born on July 29, 1978 in Rumphi, Malawi; the son of Austine Chinombo Mtumbuka and Anne-Mary Mtumbuka.
Mtumbuka received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Malawi in 2002. Three years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford.
Mtumbuka began his career, working at communications research group at Oxford University in 2002, where he had served for three years.
In 2006, he was appointed an IT service delivery co-ordinator at Shell Exploration and production.
Then in 2009, Matthews became a head of technical services at Malawi Switch Centre Limited.
He served as an IT Director and chief executive officer at Airtel Malawi Limited in Malawi from 2011 to 2015. In 2015, Mtumbuka held the same position at Airtel Malawi Limited in Lwanda.
Since 2016 he has been a claster IT governance head at Airtel Africa, where he is responsible for all IT governance activities for Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya.
Since 2017, Matthews has served as an IT governance and operations lead at the same company.
Also he works as an executive assistant for the chief information officer who heads the IT function for Airtel across 14 countries in Africa – implementing his actions in liaison with the country IT Heads.
In addition, he is a councilor and Senate vice chairman for Exploits University and a visiting lecturer at the University of Cape Town.
