Media Network on Tobacco (MNT) has raised concerns about the tendency of some vendors who are currently buying tobacco from farmers at very low prices.
According to MNT president Alfred Chauwa, there are reports that vendors are currently buying tobacco from farmers at as low as K4 000.
“We thank all those who came to show solidarity to our Tobacco Farmers whose Tobacco is being snatched at as low as K4, 000. You came to help your people in Malingunde, Dowa, Phalombe facing similar situation.
“We noted low level or declining of Social corporate responsibility by from Tobacco Companies. We have since urged Tobacco buying companies to address this issue,” he said
Further, Chauwa urged farmers to plant more trees since the Tobacco Industry consumes alot of Forestry.
“We also urge government to encourage extension workers to do their job. It is disheartening to see most farmers when asked they say we dont know our extension worker,” he said
