Madalitso Kambauwa-Wirima, the Minister of Education, has announced that Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’mbelwa University’ s in Mzimba will open its doors in August 2025 with an initial intake of 500 students.

He remarks comes after the contractors, Dec Construction Company and Paramount Holdings Limited have assured the public that they will complete construction works within eighteen months.

The first to be opened will be the school of basic sciences.

Formerly known as Mombera, the university will also have a school of veterinary medicine and a school of animal science.

During her visit to the construction site on Monday in Mzimba, Wirima revealed that the first phase of construction works had begun and would be completed by June 2025.

This includes building the school’s basic sciences department along with ancillary structures such as administration blocks and staff housing facilities.
In addition to these buildings, there will also be hostels for both male and female students along with other amenities such as cafeterias, auditoriums and sports facilities.

The estimated cost for completing the entire university is K450 billion which is expected to enroll up to 10,000 students upon completion in 2027. According to Wirima’s statement during her visit at the construction site on Monday morning:

“Government is committed to seeing through this project so that we can absorb more young people who are looking for higher education opportunities.”

Managing Director for Paramount Holdings Limited Prakash Ghedia assured Wirima that his company was ready to complete their portion of work before deadline.

He said that all the required equipment and materials are ready.

Ghedia further said the construction work alone will offer employment opportunities to more than 600 people in the district.

Mzimba District Commissioner, Rodney Simwaka expressed excitement over how this development could positively impact job creation opportunities among local residents once it opens its doors next year.
