She told Malawi News Agency on Tuesday how she got motivated to step into charitable work, saying her family’s financial struggles prevented her from affording college education.
Dhaka explained that the family’s struggle to make ends meet compelled her to compete in the Miss Culture Malawi 2023 pageant.
“I saw it as a chance to secure my education and support my family. Although I did not win the crown, my determination paid off because I secured a scholarship with Exploits University and I am grateful for the scholarship because it allowed me to continue with my education,” she said.
Dhaka has been actively involved in supporting orphanages in Blantyre, including Mayamiko Child Care in BCA Hill and her passion to help others began when she was just a child.
“Seeing someone without food pained me deeply when I was a child. Though people said my physical appearance does not fit the typical model standards, I persuaded my dream and participated in Miss Culture Malawi to help my community and those in need,” she said.
Dhaka now focuses on expanding her philanthropic reach to reach out to more less privileged people.
“lf people or organisations have items to donate – clothes, shoes or food items – I am always available to ensure these reach those in need. I am sure such donations can significantly impact someone’s life and when we visit them, we also encourage and inspire them on top of promoting importance of education,” she added.
Acting District Social Welfare Officer for Blantyre, Ireen Lakudzala, supported Dhaka’s initiative, saying the gesture was complementary.
“It is so important because it provides support and resources to needy children; contributions can improve the quality of life for these children by providing essentials like food and clothes. As such, it is very good for people to be reaching out,” she added.
Lakudzala also said there was need to collaborate with the social welfare offices for proper guidance to ensure effective humanitarian assistance.
“There are other institutions that we are still looking for various assistance and this is why there is need to pass through our office for guidance. Our office helps in identifying real vulnerable people and institutions that deserve assistance,” she added.
