Minister of Youths and Sports who is one of the renowned and experience engineer in the country on Monday, vowed to support the engineer volunteer team that is doing everything to restore Blantyre Water Board (BWB) broken main pipeline at Chisombezi River around Nguludi.
The pipeline that gets water from Likhubula Scheme in Mulanje district and supplies to some areas in Blantyre was broken due heavy rains that was accompanied by cyclone Freddy.
The problem developed water crisis in some parts of Blantyre.
And speaking after touring the area, Minister Mkandawire who is also a member of Malawi Engineering Institution Volunteer Team promised to provide his skills in order to make sure that the “dead” pipeline go back to its life.
According to him, the problem is not small and that there is need of holding hands.
“I am not here as Minister of Youths and Sports but a member of Malawi Engineering Institution Volunteer Team. I want the Blantyre residents to start receiving portable water even by today. Cholera is still around and there’s need to speed up the process,” said Mkandawire.
Dr Robert Hanjahanja who is Chief Executive Officer for Blantyre Water Board while thanking the Minister for his decision believe that his participation will bring a big morale to the workers.
Hanjahanja further disclosed that the board is tirelessly working towards restoring water supply in all affected areas.
Currently, the restoration progress according to Hanjahanja is inbetween 60 and 70 percent.
