Mighty Wanderers’ Chilomoni Stadium takeover: Whats the latest?

By Erik Chiputula:

In May this year Blantyre giants Mighty Wanderers unveiled ambitious plan of taking over management of Chilomoni stadium through a lease agreement.

At a colour handover ceremony that was graced by officials from the Super League of Malawi and Wanderers officials, it was revealed that the Nomads had successfully completed all the necessary legal requirements to assume full ownership of the stadium for a stipulated period of time.

Through the agreement the nomads were to undertake massive renovations works of the facility which was by then in a dilapidated state.

However almost five months down the line, this publication can confirm that no maintenance works have commenced on the stadium as it still lies idle in it’s old dilapidated state.

When contacted for comment, one of the Mighty Wanderers Directors Humphreys Mvula who is facilitating the project said there are still some outstanding issues that have to be ironed out between the club and stadium owners.

“Now we are finalizing some terms and conditions on all necessary issues before we start our projects” said Mvula

Mvula added that they already talked with the contractor who will be responsible for the renovations.

“The contractor is currently waiting for us to give him our bill quantity which itemizes all work to enable them price the work” he said

Meanwhile Mvula has revealed that the Lali Lubani outfit has already asked for a bank loan from one of the local commercial banks but the loan approval awaits submission of a sheet from the contractor which is a bullet-point document outlining the material terms and conditions between them.

Mvula was however non-committal on when the rehabilitation works would commence.

Despite being Malawi’s oldest football club,Wanderers have no ground to call home despite being in existence for over 50 years.

Currently the club uses Kamuzu Stadium as it’s home ground.

During the 2019 Presidential elections campaign period the then State President Peter Mutharika promised to construct a stadium for Wanderers and their rivals Nyasa Big Bullets but that project stalled immediately after Mutharika lost in the fresh 2020 Presidential Polls.
