The The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has said that opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president for the Northern Region, Jappie Mhango authorized the sell of government houses at under-valued prices of K2.95 million.
Mhango has been arrested by the ACB in relation to the issue, and awaits for a court appearance to be formally charged.
According to a statement signed by ACB spokesperson Egrita Ndala, Mhango abused his office for the advantage of Cuthbert Mhango and 11 others when he authorised the sale of houses belonging to the Ministry at under-valued leading to loss of Government revenue.
Ndala said the sell happened between 2016 and 2017 when he was Minister of Transport and Public Works.
“It is further alleged that on 11th April 2022 at the Anti-Corruption Bureau offices in Mzuzu, he provided false information to Bureau officers by stating that he does not know the landlord of the house which is rented by his second wife, Miss Thokozile Wanda, at Chimaliro in Mzuzu city, while in fact the said house was bought from Ministry of Transport and Public Works at the time he was the responsible Minister and it is owned by his direct relative by the name of Cuthbert Mhango,” reads the statement in part
