Pro-Palestinian demonstrators on Wednesday marched in Blantyre, Malawi with a renewed call to the government to reverse it’s decision of opening an embassy in Jerusalem, Israel.
The protesters gathered at the Kamuzu Upper Stadium and marched through the Masauko Chipembere Highway to Ginnery Corner roundabout.
The peaceful marchers called for an end to Israel’s blockade and bombardment of Gaza while waving Palestine Flags and chanting “Free Palestine “.
Addressing the gathering at the Kamuzu Upper Stadium, organisers of the solidarity march Forum for Democracy and Rights Defenders-FDRD hailed the participants for turning up in large numbers despite a short notice.
Sheikh Muslim Abbas Vinjenje who is also Secretary General of the ULAMA Council of Malawi said:” By opening an embassy in Jerusalem, the Malawi government is siding with Israel in oppressing the Palestinians.
“Government move to open an embassy in Jerusalem is a violation of the U.N resolution on the disputed territory, why are they not establishing it in Tel Aviv like several other African countries?,” asked Sheikh Abbas Vinjenje.
He added:”We also urging the international community to stop Israel from killing innocent civilians and children in Gaza and adhere to the Geneva convention”.
Israel regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, although that is not recognised by most countries.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict,has led to most countries that have embassies in Israel to open them in its commercial capital of Tel Aviv.
