The Malawi men’s football national team has winded up it’s 2025 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations group L assignments with an emphatic 3-0 win over Burkina Faso.
The Flames broke the deadlock on 27th minute when Frank Gabadinho Mhango found scored from a 25 metres range after receiving a lovely ball from Patrick Mwaungulu.
After the goal, Burkina Faso took over the control of the game as they tried to unlock Malawi defense but their intentions were unsuccessful and the scoreline remain 1-0 until halftime.
The visitors continued from where they left in the second, putting pressure on the Flames in search for an equaliser but the hosts remained tight at the back.
After a burst of pressure, the Flames got the second goal on 57 minutes through Richard Mbulu who headed home a cross from Lloyd Aaron.
The goal helped Malawi to settle down and they extended the lead five minutes later, thanks to Lloyd Aaron’s close range finish.
Flames interim coach Kalisto Pasuwa was excited for the performances of his boys.
“A good game that we played with intensity and as you know maybe we had few days with the boys and only did some movements and the boys responded very well, we talked with some of the senior guys in the team to say lets help each other in order for us to pull up the results” said Pasuwa
Despite the result, the Flames remains bottom of group L as they are now tied up with third placed Burundi on four points.
Commenting on today’s result, Burkina Faso coach Brama Traoré admitted that Malawi were a better side.
“Congratulations to Malawi for the win, they are a good team that I’ve seen today” said Traoré
Burkina Faso have progressed into the 2025 Total Energies African Cup of Nations after finishing second with 10 points, three a drift of leaders Senegal who have a game in hand.
