Malawi and Mozambique have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen diplomatic cooperation, especially during natural disasters.
This follows a meeting between Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Chaponda, and Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Manuel Lucas, on the sidelines of the SADC Council of Ministers meeting currently taking place in Pretoria, South Africa.
The two ministers’ discussions also focused on enhancing collaboration in responding to natural disasters, a recurring challenge affecting both countries.
According to Chaponda, the engagement underscored the importance of coordinated regional responses to climate-related disasters, including floods and cyclones, which frequently impact Southern African countries.
The SADC Council of Ministers Meeting is being held under the theme “Advancing Industrialization, Agricultural Transformation and Energy Transition for a Resilient SADC,” with ministers reviewing progress and setting policy direction for the region’s development agenda.
The regional leaders are deliberating on key strategies aimed at strengthening economic resilience and cooperation across the Southern African region.
Chaponda emphasizing the importance of strengthening regional cooperation, expanding industrial capacity, and enhancing agricultural productivity to drive sustainable economic growth in the SADC region.
Drawing on his extensive experience in international diplomacy, he reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to deepening collaboration with regional and international partners in advancing development priorities that align with both regional integration goals and Malawi’s national development agenda.
