LoP tells Chakwera to reassess his priorities

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Parliament George Chaponda has told President Lazarus Chakwera to reassess his priorities and focus on the critical issues affecting the country.

In a statement released on Friday, Chaponda said the President should consider reducing unnecessary internal travel in order to help conserve the already scarce public resources.

“In light of the current economic challenges facing our nation, it is crucial that he prioritizes responsible spending and ensure that public funds are used efficiently.

“The costs associated with excessive internal travel for government officials to attend trivial events can place a significant burden on taxpayers and divert much-needed resources away from essential services. While some engagements are undoubtedly important, many others seem to be more focused on photo opportunities and publicity stunts,” reads part of the statement

Further, Chaponda said as the nation grapples with hunger, economic stagnation, rising unemployment, healthcare crises, passport challenges, it is imperative that Chakwera devotes his time and energy to addressing these critical issues.

“The people of our nation expect and deserve a president who is engaged, attentive, and committed to finding solutions to our most pressing challenges.

“I therefore ask the President to; reduce his travel schedule and focus on pressing issues affecting our people, limit his attendance at non-essential events and ceremonies and prioritize the welfare and well-being of our citizens over photo opportunities and publicity stunts.

“By cutting down on unnecessary trips the President can set a positive example of fiscal prudence that he preached when he was in opposition and what he promised when he just ascended into power. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that public resources are managed wisely and in the best interests of the people,” he said.
