The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has handed over the Migration Governance Report to the Ministry of Homeland Security which is aimed at supporting country’s migration policy by helping assess the comprehensiveness of the governance structure and identify priorities on the way forward.
Speaking in Lilongwe on Friday during the launch of the Report, IOM Regional Director for Southern Africa, Ashraf El Nour said the Migration Governance Report is very important because it can be used to spark discussions with government and other relevant stakeholders in the country on the existing migration policy structures and assess whether the structures, which have been in place for several years, still address the main migration challenges.
“This is very critical because it helps Government to make assessment and look at Migration framework, identifies weaknesses and strengths as well as areas that requires to be improved” he said
El Nour has also commended Malawi Government for making progress by adopting and developing National Migration Policy which helps to address issues of Human trafficking and smuggling in the country.
“We have been working closely with the Ministry of Homeland Security in developing of national migration policy for the country and what is remaining is to modernize migration systems which will help to address migration challenges” he added
On his part Secretary for Ministry of Homeland Security, Oliver Kumbambe was hopeful that the Migration Governance Report will help Government in it’s efforts to deal with migration challenges.
“The Migration Governance Report that has been launched here by the international organization for migration in Malawi is a good report for us because it is the report that is looking at the issues that we have to concentrate on as we deal with management of migration in Malawi” said Kumbambe
He further admitted that the country is experiencing increase immigrants and that the report will help Government to manage such illegal movements.
