Former Mayor of Lilongwe City, Councillor Richard Banda asserts that he exited his position with pride, citing numerous projects initiated during his tenure.
In an exclusive interview, Banda emphasized the significant transformation of Lilongwe, particularly through various road projects such as Chipasula-Area 23, Chipasula-Malangalanga, Area 43, 24, Ntandile-Chenicheninchiti, and the Area 47-49 bridge.
He expressed confidence that these projects will notably alleviate traffic congestion from Chitukuko to Area 49.
“I believe I have performed to the best of my abilities. I leave my post as a fulfilled individual with my head held high. In essence, I am the most successful mayor to date,” Banda stated.
On security, Banda noted that the city council Police’s introduction has significantly reduced the problem of illegal vending.
“There is now order in the city, and the council is saving costs as we no longer need to hire officers daily,” he stated.
He also acknowledged that deploying robots in various city areas contributes to traffic regulation.
Throughout his term, the council has bolstered the refuse collection truck fleet from two to four. Regarding challenges, Banda highlighted illegal construction as his primary concern.
“I faced personal threats, but I remained steadfast. Allegations of my involvement in allocating plots to residents are baseless. The main bus terminal plots in the old town are owned by MOAM, who handle plot allocations there,” Banda clarified.
