President Lazarus Chakwera has described late Saulos Chilima as a good man, a devoted father and husband, a patriotic citizen who served his country with distinction, and a formidable Vice President.
On the other hand, the European Union (EU) has said Chilima’s remarkable dedication to democracy and to the wellbeing of Malawians will remain a testimony to his successes and constitute a pointer for future generations of political leaders.
“I consider it one of the greatest honours of my life to have had him as my deputy and counsellor for the past four years, and his passing is a terrible loss to his wife Mary, his family, his friends, his colleagues in Cabinet, and to all of us as a nation that found his leadership and courage a source of inspiration.
“And I know that even the others who were on that flight were men and women of honour who served their country with distinction and whose families are left with broken hearts today. I am profoundly sorry to all of you for this terrible loss, and I pray for God to comfort us all and bind up our wounds as we mourn together as one nation under one flag,” said Chakwera
In a post on its official page, the EU Malawi said, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the departed souls, to H.E. President Lazarus Chakwera, and to the people of Malawi, for this terrible loss. As a close partner with Malawi, our hearts are with all Malawians in this sorrow”.
The United Kingdom said; “The UK would like to express its deepest condolences on the untimely passing of the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi Rt Hon Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima and several other government officials in a plane crash. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of those who lost their lives and with the people of Malawi at this tragic time”.
