Deputy Minister of Transport Baba Steve Malondera has hunted that GPS-compatible trackers will be used on street lights in the newly constructed highways to curb vandalism.
He made the remarks after he had a joint inspection of the road construction project in Lilongwe with officials from Roads Authority (RA) and Malawi Police Services.
Recently, 57 solar panels worth K28.5 million installed to provide power to street lights along the interchange to Bingu stadium road in Lilongwe were stolen, which led to the arrest of four suspects.
The newly-constructed dual carriage from Kamuzu Central Hospital turnoff to Crossroads Hotel roundabout, has also not been spared.
“This is a very sad and unfortunate development the some citizens have taken this way. It is high time we need to arrest this malpractice, we need to find a lasting solution. We need to install solar panels GPS-compatible trackers so that our law enforcers should be able to track those responsible for vandalism,” he said
RA’s senior projects engineer, Patrick Kamanga, has disclosed that at least 10 street lights poles have been vandalised, a development he says is unfortunate in road infrastructure development.
