Government has applauded leading telecommunications company Airtel Malawi for launching the country’s first ever Artificial Intelligence Spam Alert service, aimed at protecting its customers from fraudsters.
The launch comes amid rising cases of fraudsters scamming people through fake identities and stories.
Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kunkuyu, said the launched service is a step toward strengthening Malawi’s digital economy by ensuring user protection through robust policies that safeguard national digital security.
“Malawians are going digital in all aspects of their lives but what is shying them alert are issues of fraudsters so i would like to commend Airtel Malawi for this initiative as it safeguards Malawians and this will encourage more people to come online, feel safer and do their transactions,” said Kunkuyu.
On his end, Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt, said the Spam alert is the first of its kind in Africa and Malawi in particular which is aimed to safeguard users on the Airtel network.
“A lot of customers have been complaining of fraudulent activities, we have then responded by making sure they feel secure on our services that is why today we have launched this service in order to keep them secure. We are honored to provide this service to our customers in Malawi,” he said.
According to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), mobile money users increased from 12 million in 2023 to 16.2 million in 2024 and there was a need to provide a safer way of transacting since the increase in users created more opportunities for fraudsters.
