Global Health Corps (GHC) alumni have pledged to fully dedicate themselves in tackling various critical health issues affecting communities including mental health
Considering that Mental Health issues are little discussed and heavily stigmatized, but a growing problem, particularly among young people in the country they have decided to focus much on it and other issues.
Speaking during a one day workshop in Lilongwe recently, GHC allumni Nthambose Simango said they decided to take part in issues to do with Mental Health after observing that many young people suffer in silence and when their heart are heavily burdened, they end up committing suicide.
“It feels bad to see young people loosing lives due to depression yet there are many people who can help them and he decided to take a responsibility in encouraging people, specifically young people to be able to speak out when they face challenges, “She said
Simango said they are also looking for ways of improving access to health care services for people with disability saying they depend on others to access health services and it becomes a problem when they have no one to rely on or a mean to get to the hospital.
Another fellow, Limbani Thengo said considering that their team comprises of young leaders with various expertise they will also deal with issues to do with gender based violence, sexual reproductive health, substance and drug abuse and also depression.
However, Global Health Corps Senior Country Director Symon Simkoko said there are a number of issues that are affecting the communities and they are optimistic that the allumni are going to do the good job in addressing them.
He said the allumni will also have to look at other challenges that people with disabilities are facing in accessing health services and find ways on how to address them among others.
